I enjoy my Social Media with Coffee

I came across this little infographic this weekend and I loved it. Social Media explained via coffee. Perfect!

I actually saw this on Saturday, which was National Coffee Day, but I didn’t have time to share until now. Oh well, coffee is great any time right?

I start my day with my favorite Smooth & Mellow blend from Trader Joe’s with a little sugar and some half ‘n half while I catch up on Facebook and then, if time allows, Twitter. Who about you? How do you enjoy your coffee?

Facebook Leaked Private Messages?

(*sarcasm ahead*) Say what? No way! I’m so mad!

I’m sure you’ve seen it around Facebook, but if not, let me share

Apparently facebook fooled something up and published everyone’s PRIVATE MESSAGES from 2007-11 as timeline entries. they are coming up on your page as wall posts, in addition to the wall posts that you DID actually post there on purpose.

I checked my wall, and they were there. On the right-hand side, click on each year from 2007 and on, and check the “friends” section; hover to the top right of the box and you’ll see an edit/remove option where you can choose “hide from timeline”.

Check yours because obviously what we write to an individual we didn’t want posted on facebook for everyone to see! {THIS IS NOT SPAM!!! I JUST FIXED MINE!!!!!!}


False, false, false and more false. People will get so worked up and repost anything without checking! This time it happens to be that Facebook leaked private messages. As it turns out, private messages were not leaked. What you are seeing is simply wall posts. Think of all those “Happy Birthday” posts your friends put on your wall every year. Back in the day, you couldn’t reply to a wall post, you had to click over and put your reply on your friend’s wall. So, my friends, that is what you are seeing. It looks like a private message, but I bet if you dig through your private message inbox, you won’t find it. You also won’t find those private messages you’ve saved publicly displayed on your wall.

Techcrunch has done an independent investigation and found no private message leak. If you still believe it to be true, then please share! I’d love to see screenshots of the posts in your inbox and on your timeline. I couldn’t find any of my own. I’m siding with TechCrunch on this one.

What’s the size?

There’s no point in having a social media profile if you don’t personalize it! I know I’m not the only one that has to go searching for each social media image size each time I set up a new profile or decide to spruce up my own. In fact, today’s goal (and I am soooo running out of time) is to upgrade at least one of my Twitter profiles and fix my Google+ profiles. So, while I’m working today I decided to make a resource for myself and for you! Ready? (Forgive my sloppy outlines, carpal tunnel is flaring today)

Facebook has two options- a cover photo and a profile photo. Your cover photo shows on your page and when someone hovers over your name. Your profile photo appears next to each of your posts. While your profile photo displays at 160×160, it should be uploaded at 180×180.

Twitter images include a profile photo and now a header image. Twitter does recommend 1200×600 to avoid pixelation and graininess, but I made mine 520×260. Twitter does overlay a dark gradient to your image. There is no way around that so keep that in mind. I believe it is done to help make the white text more readable. Your profile image should be square. It will be displayed at various sizes, so the image you upload should be at least 128×128.

Google+ allows you to have a profile photo and a header image.

Are you scaring your visitors?

Are your site visitors leaving before you even get a chance to capture their attention? If your site is playing audio, the answer is YES.

Many people are surfing the net a work, with or without their speakers muted. Some, like me, are playing music on Spotify or watching things on Netflix while surfing. When your page loads and music or videos automatically start, it’s annoying and in some cases leads to me leaving your site. If you playing music on your website, you may be chasing visitors away.

Is it ever OK to auto-play?

Yes. On rare occasions it is okay to have your music start when the page loads. If I’m clicking into your photo gallery, let your music play. If I’m clicking a link to visit your video, go ahead and auto-play. In both of these scenarios, I have clicked a link and knowingly expect that audio may start automatically. This gives me the opportunity to pause the other media that I may have playing (Hey, I’m watching last night’s Parenthood as I type this!)

But, I want to play my favorite song to set the mood!

If you absolutely must have your song playing, you need to include audio controls. Give me a way to turn the music off. Don’t hide the controls, make them visible. I’m not a fan of this option, I’d much rather be given the option to play the music rather than have that decision made for me. But, if we must compromise, visible audio controls are the way to go.

Dropbox and a ‘Must Have’ Plugin

I’m sure you have more than just one computer. You might have multiples, you probably have a smartphone, maybe even a tablet. Have you ever needed a file that was sitting on one device while you were on another? Enter Dropbox.

Have you ever needed to share several files with someone else? Like, maybe the person working on your website so she can edit and upload those new photos? Enter Dropbox.

Are you not sure how to backup your website? Constantly forgetting to do so? Enter Dropbox. (And a lovely little WordPress must have plugin, WordPress Backup to Dropbox)

I’ve been using Dropbox for quite awhile and I can’t recommend it enough. When you sign up, you get 2GB of free space. There are a few things you can do to earn more space, like invite your friends. Dropbox will place a special folder on your computer. Any files you put into that folder will automatically sync with Dropbox and you can get them from any other device. I don’t really use this feature as much as I could, I really only work on my laptop and drag it with me everywhere I go. But, I work with several photography clients and sometimes they need to share large images with me. They upload to their Dropbox account and then share the folder with me. Like magic, I sign in and I have access to the large files. This is one of the ways Dropbox has made my life easier.

I mostly use Dropbox for backups when doing Website Maintenance for you. (I do not use it for clients that I do regular backups for though, those are all done manually to my external drive.) When you have me make edits to your website, the first thing I do is make a backup of your current site. Often times, you’ve only given me your WordPress login and not the information I need to your hosting account. The first thing I do is install this nifty little plugin, WordPress Backup to Dropbox. I authorize the app to my Dropbox account and get a backup of your site before I do anything.

The plugin is great for WordPress. It not only backs up your files, but also your database. The plugin can be scheduled to backup regularly so you won’t have to worry about not having a regular backup. I do disable this plugin after I use it and I do delete my backup of your site about a week after my work is completed. You’ll need to activate the plugin and authorize it to YOUR Dropbox account if you want to continue using it.

What’s YOUR color?

Flowers are colorful right? You notice them against the green landscape. That’s because they pop and draw attention. Something known as the Von Restorff effect- if it stands out, it gets noticed and remembered.

Your links are nothing if they aren’t being clicked. Color draws attention, especially when a color stands out. You need to draw attention to your links to make them actionable. Make those links pop! Don’t stop with only your text links, buttons should be taken into consideration as well. You want your user to hit the submit button, so make it pop.
